Minnesota School of Business-Richfield Students Bridge Generations through Service-Learning; Star Tribune Covers the Project

Students in Katie Mader's creative writing class at MSB-Richfield have had an enriching experience with senior citizens at the Village Shores Senior Campus in Richfield. The students were paired with seniors for a service-learning project in which they developed relationships, learned about the seniors' lives, and then wrote fictional stories based on their interactions.

Mader, who is also the service-learning coordinator at MSB-Richfield, developed the project based on her  relationship with her grandfather and the stories she learned from him for a similar project she completed for her own studies.

The Star Tribune covered this fantastic project that successfully melded service-learning, We Care, and our commitment to creating valuable learning experiences for our students. Please read the complete Star Tribune article here.

Congratulations to Katie Mader for developing this enriching experience for students, and to the MSB-Richfield students for their dedication to their education and willingness to participate in their community.

Career College Students Design, Donate Activity Books

Minneapolis Business College Graphic Design students design custom activity books to donate to children in need.  All designs are original illustrations created by the students.

Roseville, MN March 2, 2010 -- Graphic Design students at Minneapolis Business College designed custom activity books to donate to charity.

The Around the World Activity Books focus on the many cultures and people throughout the world. The activity books include: word finds, coloring pages, puzzles, and other fun activities for children.

The students created hand-drawn illustrations, games, and puzzles, then brought them to life on the computer. The students started with pencil illustrations, scanned them into the computer, and finally turned their illustrations into vector art in the latest Adobe software. Each student then individually compiled their illustrations into a customized children’s activity book.

“This project was a win-win situation for everyone,” said Nichole Throndsen, Graphic Design Program Administrator. “Not only do we get to help people in need for the holidays, the students also learn how to design custom publications, and the project was a great segue into teaching them the basic drawing tools in Adobe Illustrator.”

“It was a really fun project!” said student Christine Z. “I can’t wait to give it to charity; I’m even making a second copy to give to my cousin. I had so much fun and got so involved with it; I wish I could do more.”

“It’s a great privilege to use what we are learning in school to benefit those in need during the holiday season,” said student Whitney W.

“It warms my heart to make others happy,” said student Sophia L.

Globe University Executive named to ACICS Council

February 24, 2009

Washington, D.C. - Jeanne Herrmann, chief operating officer of Globe University in Woodbury, MN, has been appointed to the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. She joins 14 other experienced, public and private-sector education professionals who together provide quality assurance for private, post-secondary institutions through peer review and evaluation.

Ms. Herrmann’s appointment fills a vacancy on the Council created by the resignation of Darrell Kerr, president of Savannah River College in Augusta, GA. Her term runs through the end of 2010.

Ms. Herrmann has served in various capacities at Globe University/Minnesota School of Business since 1997, and has been affiliated with career education since1991. She became chief operating officer in 2004. She has served as a peer evaluator for ACICS since 1998.

Ms. Herrmann earned an undergraduate degree in psychology at Hamline University in St. Paul, and completed her MBA in entrepreneurship at Globe University. She is past chair of the Minnesota Career College Association, and is a member of the Minnesota Higher Education Advisory Council and P-16 Partnership.

“We are pleased to have someone of Jeanne’s professional caliber and base of experience join the council,” said Eric Juhlin, ACICS chair. “She brings a great deal of applied knowledge and perspective to the quality assurance process, and is highly respected as an educator, administrator and peer review expert.”

ACICS accredits more than 730 professional, technical and occupational institutions serving nearly 600,000 students in the U.S. and nine foreign countries, including Saudi Arabia. ACICS is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation as a reliable authority on institutional quality.
